My friend Jennifer thought I had posted about asparagus, but I hadn't. Here I am to change that! After that popular post about Brussels sprouts, I think I should start writing about vegetables more often. They really get people talking!
Anyway, I don't like asparagus, and I never have. I won't gag if I eat it, and if someone fixes it, I'll eat it to be polite (which I would NOT do with peas), but it has a weirdness about it. It tastes like it's built with floss and algae, and you have to tear through the stringy stalk for what reward? A dull flavor that sort of has an aftertaste.
Also, it broke my camera. That picture up there was the very last photo taken by my first DSLR, may he rest in peace. There was a click, an overly-long pause, and then an error message.
One more thing about asparagus is that my late grandma pronounced it like "asparagrus," with an extra r. One time we asked her about it and she thought it was a kind of grass and spelled A-S-P-A-R-A-G-R-A-S-S. We even had to show her the real spelling in the dictionary.
Doooooo youuuuuuu like asparagus?

I like asparagus! I think it's yummy,though I like most vegetables. Thinking about it now, are there any veggies that I don't like?I am stumped!

ReplyDeleteI used to eat asparagus raw when I was little. Just pluck it out of the ground and eat it. But that sounds vile to me now, and I've long hated cooked asparagus. But just in the past couple of years I've started liking it. I like it grilled with lemon juice and salt on it. It has to be very tender, new shoots. Or making sure the toughest part of the shoots are snapped off. Cook's Illustrated says to hold it and bend it and you can tell right away where the toughest part is and snap it off--it feels REALLY wasteful though because half the time when I do that it seems like I'm throwing away half of it. But it is much more pleasant to eat without the stringiness.
ReplyDeleteI HATE canned asparagus. It is ugly, mushy and horrible tasting and I don't know how anyone eats it.

It boggles my mind that you don't like peas. I knew that already. But peas just seem so unoffensive...:( Haters gonna hate.

I've definitely had some asparagus that was almost good. It must've been tender and cooked right, but I don't remember feeling like I was breaking through millions of threads, so that was nice.
It boggles my mind that someone can like peas! Peas are the haters--they hate the human mouth so much that their mission in life is to assault it.

Love, love asparagus! Down with the Brussels Sprouts, up with asparagus! Raw in Ranch or cooked perfectly by my husband, perfect either way. Not canned though, I agree that it's too mushy. Not a pea fan either, though I've found I can tolerate them better in recent years (with butter and kosher salt), but I'd never choose them purposely. Overall, though, I think my favorite veggies would have to be broccoli or artichokes, though I know plenty of people whose stomachs would turn at the sight (or smell) of them. -R

ReplyDeleteSamantha - It was just an older version of what I have. It was the Rebel 300D, though I don't know the letter name for it now.
R - Just like with mushrooms, I *want* to like asparagus. I just don't. :/ But I don't want to like peas--they're vile. And I agree that broccoli and artichokes are two of the best veggies, though I do love zucchini too--mostly because it's cheap and versatile!
Yay! Nice picture! No white tray, but I can live with that. LOL! I hated asparagus growing up, but they aren't too bad steamed now. Still not my first choice for a vegetable, but they aren't my last choice either.
ReplyDeleteMom used to put peas in this potato soup should would cook. I hated peas at the time and would count them as I ate the soup and then announce loudly the exact number of peas in my bowl of soup. That was the only way I could express my defiance without being sent away from the table with no dinner. :)
Wow! You do get a lot of comments with vegetables. I love asparagus! (not canned, though.) Like artichokes, I enjoy the after taste even more as an older person. You know I like most foods. I like peas too! My sister always hated them! Love, Mom

I sometimes pronounce Asparagus like your grandmother did just to be a dork. I don't know if you're aware of this, but sometimes I pronounce things weird just for the heck of it.
Oh and I do like asparagus. It's one of those things that has to be done well though; bad asparagus is not appealing.
